A lot of epilation (hair removed by the root, ie. waxing, sugaring) problems can be avoided by planning ahead. Here are some simple steps that can really help with the final outcome of your waxing treatment.
DO
Exfoliate the area thoroughly in the week prior. No fancy tools or products required. Simply shower and then use your towel to buff the areas that you will be getting waxed. Dead skin will shed off easily and will help free hairs that may be trapped just below the surface. Be careful not to be too aggressive, because broken skin is a contraindication for waxing.
Hydrate your skin. This can be done anytime, but it is best and most useful, straight out of the bath or shower and after exfoliating. Dead skin is removed, pores are relaxed from warm water and your skin is clean, so ideal for putting cream on.
Plan your waxing around your menstrual cycle. Your pain threshold can be drastically reduced around your menstruating and especially during. If you are sensitive at the best of times, it’s best to plan to do your waxing around mid-cycle (14 days after your first day of mentruation).
If you are worried about pain, taking an ibuprofen(Advil) about 30 minutes prior to the appointment
Prior to getting waxed, it is important that you disclose any medical issues that may compromise the strength of your skin. (Chemo and prescription acne meds can cause a whole host of issues)
If you are using retinol/retinoids/vitamin A topically, you should cease their use in the 3-7 days prior to waxing.
DO NOT
Do not exfoliate the day of treatment! You don’t want to do anything the might start an inflammatory process on youru skin and then go get waxed. Waxing is a mini trauma to the skin and follicles and you don’t want to upset your system too much.
